Low-energy scattering of electrons and positrons in liquids

The scattering of low energy electrons and positrons is described for the liquid phase and compared and contrasted with that for the gas phase. Similarities as well as differences are noted. The loci of scattering sites, called spurs in the liquid phase, are considered in detail. In particular, their temporal and spatial evolution is considered from the point of view of scattering. Two emphases are made: one upon the stochastic calculation of the distribution of distances required for slowing down to thermal velocities, and the other upon the calculation of cross sections for energy loss by means of quantum mechanics

What Works? How Federal Contractors are Implementing Section 503: Survey Report

In September 2013, The Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) published the final rule making changes to the regulations implementing Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended (Section 503). In March 2014, new regulations went into effect, setting new requirements for federal contractors and subcontractors, related to non-discrimination and affirmative action in the employment of qualified individuals with disabilities. For example, contractors now are required to offer applicants and employees the opportunity to self-identify as a person with a disability and further to use the data collected to understand their progress toward a 7% utilization goal for employment of individuals with disabilities.1 This survey is part of a larger project entitled Initial Impact of Section 503 Rules: Identifying Effective Employer Practices and Trends in Disability Violations among Federal Contractors funded by the US Department of Labor, Chief Evaluation Office. The overall goal of this project is to understand the initial impact of these regulations on employer practices and consequently on the employment environment for individuals with disabilities. The purpose of the survey summarized in this report is to build an understanding of contractor disability-inclusive policy and practice in initially responding to Section 503 regulations. The survey is titled: What Works? How Federal Contractors Are Implementing Section 503, and is referred to as Section 503 Survey in this report

siRNA-mediated Silencing of Peroxisomal Genes in Mammalian Cells

Small interfering RNA (siRNA) has developed into the most commonly used RNAi tool for the induction of transient, shortterm silencing of protein coding genes. Although siRNA can induce gene knockdown in a variety of mammalian cell lines, their utility is limited by efficient uptake of synthetic oligonucleotides into the cells. Here, we describe different transfection methods which have been successfully used by us to silence peroxisomal genes in a variety of cell lines, including primary human skin fibroblasts, which are usually difficult to transfect.We would like to thank J. Detection and immunolabelling of peroxisomal proteins

The final version is available from Humana Press via the DOI in this record.Peroxisomes are essential organelles in mammals which contribute to cellular lipid metabolism and redox homeostasis. The spectrum of their functions in human health and disease is far from being complete, and unexpected and novel roles of peroxisomes are being discovered. To date, those include novel biological roles in anti-viral defence, as intracellular signalling platforms and as protective organelles in sensory cells. Furthermore, peroxisomes are part of a complex network of interacting subcellular compartments which involves metabolic cooperation, cross-talk and membrane contacts. As potentially novel peroxisomal proteins are continuously discovered, there is great interest in the verification of their peroxisomal localisation. Here, we present protocols used successfully in our laboratory for the detection and immunolabelling of peroxisomal proteins in cultured mammalian cells. We present immunofluorescence and fluorescence-based techniques as well as reagents to determine peroxisome-specific targeting and localisation of candidate proteins.We would like to thank A. Analytical treatment of stabilization

We present a summarizing account of a series of investigations whose central topic is to address the question whether atomic stabilization exists in an analytical way. We provide new aspects on several issues of the matter in the theoretical context when the dynamics is described by the Stark Hamiltonian. The main outcome of these studies is that the governing parameters for this phenomenon are the total classical momentum transfer and the total classical displacement. Whenever these two quantities vanish, asymptotically weak stabilization does exist. For all other situations we did not find any evidence for stabilization. We found no evidence that strong stabilization might occur. Our results agree qualitatively with the existing experimental findings
